You probably know that it is not possible to function properly under the negative or pessimistic voices in our heads. “This speech probably won’t go well.” “I’m always unlucky — good things never happen to me.”
It can take a tremendous amount of focus to function in such distracting environment. The worst thing is that those negative thoughts come to our mind when they are the last thing that we need when we’re tired, hungry, lonely, sad, sick, or in some other kind mental or physical pain. It seems that when we feel weak, the negative voices only gain in strength and intensity.
One of the easiest ways to counter all these negative emotions is to rebalance your internal dialogue with positive affirmations. When you start to say positive things to yourself, you start to take control of your thoughts. And it is not enough to only say those statements, you need to believe them. Those positive thoughts will slowly begin to shift the balance toward a more optimistic, compassionate and self-accepting way of relating to yourself.
Start doing it today. Prepare a list of positive affirmations that you want your mind to accept. Read through your list four or five times a day. Let yourself hear the words without trying to analyze them or debate about whether they are true. Don’t worry if you don’t feel anything immediately. Be patient, believe, and give it some time
The world can be a hard place already. Do we really need to make things even more difficult for ourselves? Instead of being a harsh critic, be a best friend to yourself. Instead of relying on negative internal dialogue, choose your thoughts and the words you use to express them consciously. Be in control of your emotions, your life, and your destiny.
